NEED SOME ADVICE… Buying a Flute First year flute students are often very energetic and quite young. It is therefore not a wonder that a beginner's flute is manufactured to be durable and affordable. Such flutes are usually silver-plated with a C foot, with closed keys and an offset G, such as the Armstrong 104.
There is no definite recommended allocation of time that a student should remain a beginner; therefore individuals will ultimately decide when they would like to purchase a better instrument. The intermediate instrument typically has a solid silver head joint with a sliver-plated body. At this level, the student might prefer open keys and either an inline or offset G, with a B foot. A solid silver head joint will produce a warmer tone with a sweeter quality. The most popular flute in this range is the Armstrong 303 EOS.
Some students may decide to skip the intermediate flute and immediately advance to buying a professional flute. Flutes at this level typically have a solid silver head joint and body with silver-plated keys. The Armstrong 80 E-OS and 80B E-OS are examples of such flutes.
To Split the E or not to Split the E. This feature was designed to improve intonation and control over the high E, a problematic note for most flautists. It is built onto the flute, but only available with an offset G key, and closes the upper of the G keys, forcing the air to a lower tone hole.
Open Hole vs. Closed Hole Where closed hole flutes have their keys made solid, open hole flutes have holes in the keys where the player's fingers will cover them. Both options are available for all levels and it is of course a matter of personal preference. Closed holes are generally recommended to beginners, with the musician typically moving to open holes with an intermediate or advanced flute.

Many options are available, including offset or in-line keys, a split-E key, and solid gold or gold-plated lip plate and keys, which can be beautifully engraved.
