Buying a Clarinet
The clarinet range can be easily divided into three categories, making it quite simple to find a clarinet to suit your playing level and budget.
Student clarinets are generally made of plastic or resonate to be cost affective for parents. They require less maintenance and are not susceptible to cracking like wood instruments.
Intermediate level clarinets are made of Grenadilla wood and are similar in many respects to professional clarinets. They have the advantage of the fuller and more resonate sound of wood (as apposed to plastic) but at a much lower price than the professional clarinets.
Professional level clarinets are designed for optimum sound intonation and technical facility. These clarinets feature undercut tone holes for better intonation and tone, specially tapered (and often polished) inner bores for evenness of tone colour across the instruments entire range, the choicest wood, and sometimes thicker walls for a darker sound. Professional clarinets also offer additional key work to assist in the performance of difficult music.
