THE TALKING DRUM
The talking drum, like the bata, has its origin in West Africa. Many of today´s foremost players live in native tribes. Here players talk to each other with their drums in a special language which is only understood by those persons who have been initiated into the tribe.
The traditional playing technique involves "squeezing" the tuning ropes while hitting the head with a small bent wooden mallet. This causes the pitch of this extraordinary drum to vary widely and produces an unique effect. Meinl builds the shell from premium fiberglass and has replaced the natural hyde tuning ropes with long-wearing nylon straps, which resist the tendency to stretch.
The larger model is equipped with a durable plastic head for increased volume and durability while on tour. On the smaller talking drum a hand selected True-Skin cow head produces the more traditional sounds. Both models include a special curved wooden beater.
