Cajon

Originating in Peru, the Cajon - a box-shaped with a single hole hand-played percussion - is gaining popularity. It is played in Afro-Peruvian music and made its way to flamenco. Cajons are played by sitting on the box and tapping or slapping the side with the fingers or palm. In the early 20th century, the Cajon underwent considerable technological advancement, leading to its current more popular form, the bass-box drum. This design used a select tone of the wood. 

 

In the 1970s, the Cajon master Caitro Soto gave Spanish guitarist Paco de Lucía a cajon during his visit to Peru. De Lucía liked the sound of the Cajon so much that he purchased another box before going back to his country. Through De Lucia, Cajon made its way in Flamenco music. Since then, Cajon has been incorporated into every style of music, including modern rock and hip hop music. There are modifications to the design where some add kick pedals while others use brushes and sticks to play it.
